WINE LABEL WHISKEY Art Deco Enamel
A mid 20th century silver and enamel Wine Label in the Art Deco style, of rectangular form with raised eyelets and concave cut corners, engine turned background, enamelled in black for WHISKEY on a white guilloche enamel panel.
By Turner & Simpson, Birmingham, 1950.

WINE LABEL GOOSEBERRY WINE CALEDONIAN HORTICULTURAL PRIZE WITH RECIPE
An extremely fine and rare early 19th century Scottish heavy cast silver Wine Label, of "Reclining Dionysus" form, the shaped oval label with elaborate border of grapes, foliage, flower heads and a bacchanalian mask head, a recling figure of Dionysus being attended by a putto above. The scrolled oval nameplate engraved; To Mrs Rhind for excellent GOOSEBERRY WINE From the Cal:Hort:Soc:1814. By William Peat, Edinburgh 1814. Complete with original hand written recipe for Gooseberry Wine, dated 1808.
The Caledonian Horticultural Society are recorded as awarding a number of these Wine Labels as prizes during the first half of the 19th century, but most interestingly, this label is accompanied by the original recipe sent to Mrs Rhind by Mrs Lloyd and dated January 29th 1808. The recipe reads as follows:- "Green Gooseberry Wine. When the fruit are full grown, and before they change colour - to every pound of Gooseberries when pick'd and bruised - put one quart of cold spring water - let them stand three days stirring them often - then strain the liquor and to every gallon now measured off - put three pounds of loaf sugar, stir it well and when the sugar is difsolved Barrel and put a quart of the best Brandy to every twenty gallons of wine, and a little isinglafs. Take care to fill the cask - let it stand in the cask at least six months before you bottle it. N:B: As this wine is very sweet it wou'd be just as well if it were suffered to remain a year before Bottled off - but this depends on the taste"

WINE LABEL WHITE HORSE WHISKY 1914
A rare early 20th century silver and enamel “Advertising” Wine Label, made in the Art Nouveau style with black enamelled name and logo for White Horse Whisky, scrolled outline and thistle surmount. White Horse Whisky is produced by White House Distillers, who were known until 1924 as Mackie and Co., and was established by a Mr. James Logan Mackie in 1861. The Company became successful under its second head Mr. Peter Mackie an entrepreneur and the driving force who registered the name 'White Horse' named after a famous Edinburgh coaching inn for his blend in 1890. When he died in 1924 his whisky was one of the foremost blends in the entire world.

PAIR WINE LABELS FIVE TOPERS ONE & TWO
A good quality pair of modern heavy cast silver Wine Labels pierced for ‘ONE’ and ‘TWO’, copies of the famous “Five Topers” design made by Edward Farrell in 1817 depicting five Dutchmen surrounding the scrolled cartouche shaped label, drinking, smoking and generally enjoying themselves – after a design by the Dutch artist W.Teniers.

WINE LABEL CLARET London, 1807. Entire Putto without figleaf !
A very good George III heavy cast silver Wine Label of “two Putti with jug and bottle” form, depicting two naked Putti, one holding a goblet and a flask, the other a basket of grapes supporting a scroll shaped name panel pierced for CLARET. Bacchus mask below. Quite unusually, the left hand Putto is cast complete, without a fig leaf to conceal the fact that he is quite obviously a male, as is more often the case.
Makers mark obliterated by piercing. London. 1807.
